A submarine-launched drone is an unmanned aerial or underwater system designed to be deployed directly from a submerged vessel. It allows underwater platforms to extend their sensing, communication, or reconnaissance capabilities without surfacing. This type of system is engineered to operate under extreme pressure, limited space, and complex launch conditions.

These drones are typically stored in sealed launch tubes or specialized canisters within the submarine. Once released, they can transition from underwater deployment to air or underwater navigation depending on their design. Some models are configured for vertical launch through buoyant ascent, while others are ejected using compressed systems before activation.

The internal design focuses on compactness and durability. Components must withstand saltwater exposure, pressure variations, and vibration during launch. Materials such as corrosion-resistant alloys and sealed electronic housings are commonly used. Navigation systems often rely on inertial guidance combined with satellite or acoustic positioning once operational.

Communication is a technical challenge due to the underwater environment. As a result, many systems use delayed data transmission or surface relay methods after deployment. This enables information gathered during missions to be transmitted when conditions allow.
