Guide to Fasting

Writer's picture: ICS ChurchICS Church

As we begin ICS Prayer Week, we encourage everyone to consider fasting as a meaningful spiritual practice to draw closer to God. Throughout Scripture and church history, fasting has been a way for believers to seek God’s presence, strengthen their faith, and align their hearts with His will. This week, let’s come together as a church to set aside time for prayer and fasting, trusting God for guidance and breakthrough in our lives, our community, and beyond.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is a spiritual practice that has been part of ICS Church for years. Simply put, it’s about taking a step back from certain activities—like eating or drinking—for a set time, with the purpose of drawing closer to God. It’s not just about giving something up; it’s about creating space in your heart and mind to focus on Him.

Most people pair fasting with prayer because the two go hand in hand. When we fast, we intentionally set aside distractions to heighten our spiritual focus, deepen our prayer life, and rely on God more fully. Think of it as training your spirit to be stronger than your physical cravings or human will.

A Word of Caution

Before you start fasting, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor—especially if you have any health concerns. Not everyone is physically able to fast from food, and that’s okay! Your health matters to God too.

Here are some situations where fasting might not be a good idea without professional guidance:

  • If you’re underweight or have struggled with eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia.

  • If you’re feeling weak or dealing with anemia.

  • If you’re battling serious health issues like cancer, tumors, or heart disease.

  • If you have chronic conditions affecting your kidneys, liver, lungs, or heart.

  • If you rely on insulin for diabetes or have hypoglycemia.

  • If you’re pregnant or nursing.

If you fall into one of these categories, don’t worry—there are other ways to fast that we’ll cover below!

How to Approach Fasting

Fasting is personal, and there’s no “one-size-fits-all” way to do it. What matters most is your heart and your willingness to seek God. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  • Skip one meal a day. This is a great option if you’re new to fasting or if you have a busy schedule.

  • Skip one or two meals per day. If you’re feeling led to go a little further, this could be a meaningful step.

  • Go for a full-day fast. For those ready for a bigger challenge, you can abstain from food for an entire day or more.

If you’re fasting for a full day or longer, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • If you need an energy boost, fruit juice can be a helpful option.

  • Be careful with medications—some need to be taken with food, so adjust accordingly.

Not Fasting Food? No Problem!

If fasting meals isn’t an option for you, don’t worry! You can still participate by stepping away from other activities that take up your time and attention. Consider fasting from things like:

  • Watching TV or scrolling endlessly online.

  • Spending time on sports or hobbies.

  • Anything that distracts you from focusing on God during this time.

Remember, the goal of fasting isn’t just to “give up” something—it’s to fill that space with prayer, worship, and God’s Word.

A Final Thought

Fasting is a powerful way to grow closer to God. Whether you’re fasting from food, activities, or something else, the heart behind it is what matters most. May this time of prayer and fasting draw you nearer to Him and deepen your faith. God bless you as you take this step!
